How are fungi different from plants? What is the relationship between fungi and lichens? Why lichens live on tree trunks, branches, rocks or twigs? Why do mushrooms have a ‘cap’? We will answer all of these questions and many more interesting ones! We will search for fungi and lichens under leaves, on tree barks, branches, and trunks inside Forstenrieder Forest. We will examine them with magnifying glasses and learn more about their structure and life cycle, and do many more exciting scientific activities!

Can you spot where berries, pines, nuts, and seeds are? and from which plant? We are at the end of the summer and many trees and bushes in the forest have already started to produce seeds for next spring! We are going to explore Forstenrieder forest, hunt, and collect fruits and seeds from trees, bushes, and grasses and identify the plants and their life cycle. We will do an exciting scavenger hunt and at the end of the session, we will make seed bombs for your wildlife garden with the seeds collected during our exploration.

Why seeds have different shapes? Why do leaves change color? Why snail shells have a spiral shape? Why ladybirds are red with black spots? Nature comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Together we will learn how the nature element's shapes and colors are made, and what influences them. We are going to explore Forstenrieder forest and we will collect and examine as many natural elements we found interesting (like seeds, leaves, berries, feathers, snail shells, ladybugs, spider webs, stones, and so on). We will create beautiful autumn ‘snow’ globes and art collages with all the natural elements collected.

What species of bird is that? What is it doing? Why males have brighter colours than females? Do all birds migrate? We will walk along the Isar River in Munich city centre. Together we will observe birds, learn how to identify common freshwater- and city- species, their tracks and signs, characteristics of their behaviour and what are their main threats. We will create together anti-collision bird signs for your house windows to prevent birds injuries.

Do you want to study animals and plants? how to identify and observe them? Where should you go to explore? In this workshop, you will learn the very first steps on how to be a naturalist and tips on how to become an expert on local wildlife. We will learn together how to analyze your observations and which equipment to bring with you on a nature walk, and how to use it (e.g. compass, binoculars, cameras, field guides, nature journals). We will do all of this in the forest!

How much do footprint features (shape, size) tell us about the animal’s behavior and biology? In this fantastic adventure, you will learn where to look for tracks, how to look at them, how to recognize and identify them and the trails left behind in the wild. You will use magnifying glasses and animal tracks tool kit for the investigations and you will be involved in fun scientific activities!

Age: 4-10 years old

Duration: 1 hour

Max number of kids: 10 (plus parents/grandparents are welcome, one per child)

The workshop is in English and the children will:  

• make scientific observations, learn how to search for tracks in different environments such as grass, mud, sand and snow and on tree barks and leaves,

• identify several animals by their tracks

• spot how similar some tracks are to others and their patterns,

learn important facts of animal behavior deducing them from tracks

What sound is that? Each season provides different sounds like rain, wind blowing, leaves falling, birds and other animals. During this workshop, we will listen to different sounds produced in nature and we will identify where these are produced and classify the sound makers. Children will learn to describe sounds and classify them, to concentrate, and to relieve stress. We will investigate, experiment and create sensory bottle sounds. Lots of fun is guaranteed!
