8th week - Busy week

25th-30th of May 2020

I have been monitoring the Song thrush nest the whole week. I went to visit it around 5.30-6.00 am in the morning and stayed just for a few minutes to check that everything was OK. Both Song thrush parents have been super-busy in bringing the food to the babies. On the first days they catch very small food items, then when the babies start to grow they usually bring to them same food but bigger in size. What do they eat? They eat earthworms, snails and various small insects and larvae that are found under bushes, and also berries and fruit too. Thus they are omnivorous. Did you know that Song thrushes are specialized in using stones to break the shell of the snails? They use stones as an anvil, usually they have one favorite one, on which they smash the snail until its shell breaks so they can eat the soft body, after that they wipe it on leaves to clean it from the small broken shell remaining parts.

In some pictures below, you will see that many times the babies opened up their mouth in my presence, as sign of begging for food. This is because I moved the branches while taking the photo, and they probably thought I was one of their parents. Their sight is still weak at this age.
